Seven red flags that a "money app" is wasting your time (or worse)

Published Oct 10, 2026 · updated Jul 30, 2026

Most beermoney programs are boring and legitimate. The dangerous minority follow patterns so consistent you can learn to spot them in about two minutes of looking. Here's the checklist the community effectively runs on every new app that shows up promising easy money.

1. You have to pay to earn

The one absolute rule. Deposits, "activation fees," paid tiers that unlock withdrawals. Any of these means you are the revenue, not the earner. Real programs make money from advertisers and market research, never from you.

2. The signup bonus is implausibly large

A legitimate welcome bonus is modest, because the company recoups it from your ordinary activity. An app promising a huge sum just for installing has priced that promise assuming you'll never be able to collect it. See the next flag.

3. The minimum payout keeps moving

The classic shape: earn fast toward a cashout threshold, then watch earning rates collapse just before you reach it, or watch the threshold itself rise. If reviews mention "I got to $95 of $100 and it slowed to nothing," that's not bad luck, it's the design.

4. Payment proof is nowhere to be found

Legitimate programs leave a trail of real payout screenshots across Reddit and review sites going back years. If searching an app's name plus "payment proof" turns up nothing but promotional posts, let someone else be the test case.

5. Watching ads is the whole product

Ad revenue per view is tiny, a fraction of a cent. Any app claiming you'll earn meaningful money primarily by watching ads is describing an economy that cannot exist. The ads are real; your payout is the imaginary part.

6. It wants permissions it can't justify

A survey app has no business reading your contacts or SMS. Data harvesting is the actual product for some "earning" apps, and the pay-per-task is the bait.

7. Support goes silent at cashout time

Read the newest reviews specifically, and look for the pattern of accounts banned or tickets ignored exactly when a withdrawal is pending. Programs with real support have complaint threads that end in resolution, not silence.

The two-minute habit

Before any signup: search the name on r/beermoney, skim the newest low-star reviews for the patterns above, and check whether the program's own site plainly states payout minimums and methods. Every program listed on this site has a facts page (payout types, minimums, referral terms, and when we last verified them) precisely so this check takes seconds instead of an evening.
