Should you take the gift card or the PayPal cash?

Published Aug 23, 2026 · updated Jul 30, 2026

A lot of programs let you cash out either as PayPal cash or as a gift card, and often the gift card is offered at a lower threshold or with a small bonus. Which should you take? It depends on one honest question: would you have spent that money there anyway?

If a program offers an Amazon gift card and you shop at Amazon constantly, taking the gift card (especially at a lower cashout minimum or with a bonus) is effectively free extra value. You were going to spend there regardless, so the card is as good as cash to you, sometimes better.

If you wouldn't naturally spend at that retailer, the gift card is worth less than its face value to you, because it locks your earnings into a store you don't care about. In that case the flexible PayPal cash is worth waiting for, even if it means a higher threshold.

The trap is chasing a gift-card bonus for a store you don't use, because the bonus makes the number bigger. A 10% bonus on a gift card you'll struggle to spend is worth less than plain cash you can use anywhere. Match the payout to your actual life: cards for stores you already frequent, cash for everything else. It's a small decision that quietly determines whether your earnings feel real or feel stuck.
