Prolific referral code: why you cannot find one, and what those $30 offers actually are

Prolific is the platform this community recommends more consistently than any other, and searching for a Prolific referral code is one of the more frustrating experiences in beermoney. You will find pages offering $30, and one currently advertising £240. None of them will work for you. Here is what is actually going on, taken from Prolific's own help pages.

There are two Prolifics

Prolific has two completely separate kinds of user, and they have different referral arrangements.

Researchers are the academics and companies who pay to run studies. They do have a referral program: refer another researcher and you both get £25 or $30 in Prolific credit. The catch is that the referrer must have already spent £100 or $125 on the platform, and the person referred must spend the same within 30 days.

Participants are everyone here: the people who take the studies and get paid. Prolific's participant help centre says it plainly. At this time Prolific does not offer a referral programme, so you will not receive rewards for bringing friends or family to the platform.

Almost every "Prolific referral code" page you will find is quoting the researcher offer. That is why the numbers look generous and why they are useless: the credit is spending money for buying studies, not earnings for taking them, and unlocking it requires spending $125 of your own first.

The exception, and why you probably do not have it

There is one wrinkle worth knowing. Prolific occasionally runs a paid participant referral program to recruit people matching specific demographics, driven by what researchers are currently asking for.

If it applies to you, a Refer a Friend button appears in your account toolbar, and the referral page states the criteria, sometimes as narrow as one country of residence. If that button is not there, you are not eligible, and there is nothing to find. It is not hidden in a settings menu.

What to do instead

Prolific participants join through a waitlist rather than open signup, so there is no code field to fill in even if you had one. Sign up to the waitlist and wait to be invited.

If someone did refer you through an active eligibility-gated program, they would need to enter your email address themselves. There is no code for you to enter and no link for you to paste.

Why we do not list Prolific

This site pools referral codes, and Prolific has nothing to pool for participants. Listing it would mean a program page with an empty pool that could never fill, which would be a nice way to look bigger and a poor way to be useful.

That is not a criticism of Prolific. A platform can be the best-regarded thing in its category and still not run a referral program, and those are unrelated facts. The programs we do list are the ones where a referral actually pays somebody, with the current terms and check dates on the bonuses page.
