Upside review: cashback on the one purchase you can't skip

Published Sep 4, 2026 · updated Jul 30, 2026

Most beermoney asks you to do something extra. Upside GGE43 attaches to a purchase you literally cannot avoid if you drive: fuel. That's its whole appeal, and judged on that narrow promise, it delivers.

What it is

Upside is a cashback app for gas stations, plus participating grocery stores and restaurants. You claim an offer in the app before you pay, buy as normal (check in or snap the receipt depending on the offer), and cash back lands in your Upside balance. Offers are per-station and change constantly, which is the point. Stations use it to compete for your fill-up.

What works

Gas is the killer use. The per-gallon offers vary by station and day, and the app makes the nearest few stations' offers visible at a glance, so the habit is simply "open Upside before choosing a pump." Because fuel is a recurring, unavoidable spend, even modest per-gallon cashback compounds into real money over a year of normal driving without a single extra errand.

Where it falls short

Offer quality swings. Some days the best nearby offer is genuinely good; some days it's pennies, and chasing a distant station for a better rate burns the savings in fuel. The math only works when you treat it as "best offer among stations I'd plausibly use anyway." Grocery and restaurant offers exist but are patchier. Think of them as occasional extras, not the reason to install it. And cashing out small balances by some methods can carry a fee, so let it accumulate a bit.

Payouts

Balance cashes out to PayPal, bank, or gift cards; the fee structure favors larger, less frequent cashouts. Details on the Upside program page.

The referral angle

Upside's referral typically gives both sides a per-gallon bonus on early fill-ups. The exact promo varies, so check the current offer. Join through a member's code and you both get it: draw an Upside code.

Bottom line

If you drive, this is one of the easiest genuine wins in beermoney: zero new behavior, real recurring spend, honest if variable rates. If you don't drive, skip it: the non-gas offers alone don't carry it.
