Why didn't my cashback track? (And how to stop losing it)

Published Oct 6, 2026 · updated Jul 30, 2026

The single most common complaint about cashback portals isn't fraud, it's the purchase that silently never tracked. You clicked through, you bought the thing, and days later: nothing. The good news is that untracked cashback has a short list of causes, almost all preventable.

The usual suspects

Ad blockers and privacy extensions top the list. Cashback tracking works through affiliate cookies, which is exactly what those tools exist to kill. Second: other coupon and cashback extensions fighting for the same credit, if two services both claim your click, one of them (often yours) loses. Third: wandering off mid-purchase. Click through the portal, browse for an hour, open five other tabs, come back, and the tracking session may be long gone. Fourth: applying a coupon code the store didn't get from the portal itself; many retailers void cashback when an unlisted code touches the cart.

The clean-click ritual

The fix is a thirty-second routine. Empty your cart first. Pause the ad blocker for the store's site (or use a browser profile without extensions for cashback shopping, the tidiest solution). Click through the portal fresh, complete the purchase in that same session without detours, and only use coupon codes listed by the portal itself. It sounds fussy written down; in practice it becomes automatic within a week.

When it still doesn't track

Every reputable portal (Rakuten and TopCashback included) has a missing-cashback claim process. File it with your order number and date; most claims on legitimate purchases eventually resolve. Two caveats: claims take weeks because the store has to confirm the sale, and repeated claims on the same store sometimes just mean that store's tracking is flaky. Factor that into whether its rate is worth the friction.

Keep perspective

Losing a few percent on one purchase is annoying, not ruinous. The habit that matters is the ritual on your larger purchases, where the cashback is actually worth protecting. Get those right and the occasional untracked coffee order stops mattering.
